For the first time, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain chaired the awards ceremony of the 22nd International Rey de España (King of Spain) Journalism Awards and the 1st Don Quijote Award for Journalism in a public ceremony in Casa de América in Madrid.

A new service called the World Digital Agenda (La Agenda Digital Mundial) is introduced. It can be consulted from any computer connected to the Internet and it pools the countless forecasts and official announcements that reach the newspaper offices and EFE bureaus all over the world. This product offers all types of cultural, sports, economic, political and social events, etc., in the short-, medium- and long-term.
The Arabic language news service is launched with headquarters in Cairo, and has the objective of building bridges, uniting voices, exchanging knowledge and a maxim: “to inform in order to bring cultures closer; to bring cultures closer in order to unite people”. EFE collaborates with the DPA Arabic service to exchange news.

TVEFE America (Spanish) and TVEFE Brasil (Portuguese), a strategic alliance between Television Española and EFE to create the first audiovisual international news service, is born. A few months later, the product is expanded with services such as TVEFE in Arabic and TVEFE International in English.

The head office of EFE in Barcelona is moved to Roc Boronat street, sharing the building with Spanish National Radio ( Radio Nacional). This move is part of an agreement with RTVE (Spanish television) to share offices around Spain.
The Agencia EFE and Edicions 62 published “EFE 20 Anys de noticies en catalá”, due to the 20th anniversary since the news service in Catalonian (Servei en Catalá) started. The book gathers in over 100 pictures the main events occurred in Catalonia. Previously, EFE had a news service in Catalonian from 1978 to 1983.
