Colombia drug lord Pablo Escobar, who was killed by security forces in 1993, spent his fortunes on lavish homes, women and cars. But among his most extravagant purchases were exotic animals, which he imported from a zoo in the United States to roam on his private ranch in Medellin, his hometown.

Among those imports were four hippos, who over the years have escaped into the Colombian wilderness, where they have been breeding.
