Two students and the suspected attacker were killed Thursday in a shooting at a high school in the southwestern US state of New Mexico, authorities said.
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld, was fatally shot by law enforcement personnel, the New Mexico State Police said.
The families of the two Aztec High School students killed were notified immediately, authorities said.
State police said that no one else was hurt in the incident.
The high school's 900 students were transported to a safe location as police carried out a thorough search of the building. Other schools in the region were also placed on lockdown.
Aztec is a town of roughly 6,500 people in an oil-and-gas-producing area of northwestern New Mexico.
The New Mexico State Police said that the sheriff's department in San Juan County would take the lead in the investigation of the shooting.
