Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, world No. 3, decided to renounce her United States citizenship to be able to represent her country in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, national television NHK reported Thursday.

According to the Japanese law, the 21-year-old is obliged to choose between her two nationalities as soon as she turns 22 on 16 October.

Osaka, a daughter of a Japanese mother and Haitian father, has chosen her birth country because she wanted to represent Japan in the upcoming Olympic Games.

“For me it will be a special feeling to be able to represent Japan in the Tokyo Games,” Osaka said.

Last Sunday, Osaka claimed the China Open title after defeating Australian Ashleigh Barty 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The former world No. 1 had previously expressed her desire to represent Japan in the Games, and has already participated with the Japanese team in tournaments like the Fed Cup and Hopman Cup. EFE
