Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova on Tuesday put an end to Mónica Puig's Madrid Open hopes after she defeated her 6-3, 7-6.

Kvitova, who has won the tournament in the Spanish capital twice before, claimed her victory over the Puerto Rican Olympic gold medalist in one hour, 53 minutes.

The Czech star, who was putting in her ninth appearance at the competition in Madrid, returning to the sport after recovering from an injury, gave her best performance in the first set.

Kvitova's win would thus see her advance to the third round, where she is set to face off against either Alexandra Sasnovich of Belarus or Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, depending on the winner of that match.
