Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova qualified on Tuesday to the third round of the Madrid Open, following a 6-1, 6-2 win against Colombian Mariana Duque Marino in just one hour and 13 minutes.

Sharapova, currently ranked 3rd in the world, started her title defense quest in Madrid on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-3 win against the world's 21st ranked player, the Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, in one hour and 21 minutes.

It appears Sharapova has found her footing after her loss in the 2015 Grand Prix tournament in Stuttgart two weeks ago against German player Angelique Kerber, suffering a early elimination from the tournament's second round, and subsequently getting devalued to third place in the WTA rankings by Romanian Simona Halep, who snatched the second position.

In Madrid's third round, Sharapova will meet the winner of the match between French player Caroline Garcia and the Czech Karolina Pliskova.
