Russian coach Stanislav Cherchesov, 52, has been named to head the Russian national team, announced on Thursday the Sports Minister and chairman the Russian Football Union, Vitaly Mutko.

Mutko said that the coach's contract lasts until August 1, 2018, after the end of World Cup which will be held in Russia, but he will be happy if all goes well and Cherchesov can continue his work after that date.

The new coach, league and cup champion with Polish side Legia Warsaw, is replacing Leonid Slutsky, who resigned after the failure at Euro 2016 in France, where he did not pass the group stage.
