Wall Street was lower near midday on Friday, with its benchmark indicator, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, down around 600 points a day after plunging by a record 1,190 points.

The major sell-off has put US markets on course for their worst week since the 2008 financial crisis.

The Dow had moved down 2.09 percent, or 538 points, to 25,229 five minutes after the start of trading in New York, while the broader-based S&P 500 index was 2.12 percent lower and the tech-heavy Nasdaq index had sunk by 1.99 percent.
