Heavy rains have left 15 people dead and 19 others injured this week in Afghanistan's northwestern province Badakhshan, as well as causing damage to several properties, an official source told EFE Saturday.

Floods also hit Kabul and the northwestern province of Parwan this week, Afghan Disaster Management Authority spokesperson Omar Mohammadi said.

The Bagrami district in the Afghan capital suffered flooding, while Parwan recorded material losses, Mohammadi said.

Several farms were destroyed resulting in economic losses, while some houses were also damaged, he added.

Last year, heavy rains in northern Afghanistan claimed nearly 100 lives - a death toll similar to that of the 2015 rains - as well as damaging crops and farms.

Each year, rains lead to significant loss of life and property in South Asian countries, particularly during the monsoon season between June and September. EFE
