Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in Berlin on Tuesday that his country is a "protective wall" for Europe, because it preserves it against jihadist terrorism and partly reduces the wave of refugees.

"We are the protective wall of western civilization" in the Middle East, Netanyahu said at the press conference he gave in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The Israeli Prime Minister stressed that his country is not only defending itself, but also acts on behalf of the "values" of the West.

Merkel, who also recognized the complicated geographical environment of Israel, said that bilateral cooperation in security with Israel has high significance for Berlin.
