Prince Akishino of Japan and his wife Princess Kiko on Tuesday began their official one-week trip to Chile with a visit to the National Historical Museum of Santiago.

Guided by the museum's director Pablo Andrade, the couple toured the different areas of the exhibition, which showcases important heritage collections of Chile.

Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko will also meet President Michelle Bachelet and celebrate the 120 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Chile.

The royal couple, who will remain in Chile until October 2, also met with about 3,000 Japanese descendants living in the Latin American country.

Next, they will visit the country's southern region, where they will participate in a welcome ceremony at Chile's government house, Palacio de la Moneda, where they will meet President Michelle Bachelet.

According to their program, the Japanese royal couple are then traveling to the port city of Valparaiso, where they will visit a tsunami observatory.

The royal couple will also drop by Puerto Montt in southern Chile to visit a salmon farm, which exports a large part of its production to Japan.
