At least 11 people were killed in an attack carried out by Al-Shabab against the headquarters of the Education Ministry in the Somali capital city of Mogadishu, security sources told Efe on Tuesday.

Al-Shabab, which killed 148 people at Garissa University College in northeastern Kenya less than two weeks ago, claimed responsibility of the attack

At noon on Tuesday, an unknown number of gunmen entered the ministry, where explosions and gunfire were heard, although African Union troops arrived shortly after and killed the assailants.

Government buildings are a recurring target for Al-Shabab, which in recent years has repeatedly attacked the presidential palace, the Parliament, and several hotels frequented by Somali politicians and diplomats.

Al-Shabab, which pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda in 2012, has executed a string of terrorist attacks, including the September 2013 slaughter of 67 people at a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
