Ambiguous laws to curb fake news should not be used to prosecute those accused of spreading falsehoods about a new coronavirus and authorities should instead lead information campaigns, Southeast Asian rights activists said Wednesday.

The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights criticized the laws – common to many Southeast Asian countries – in a statement and said funds and efforts should instead be used to launch public messaging campaigns about the effects of the deadly COVID-19 virus. EFE-EPA
