Two United States government-chartered planes carrying hundreds of US citizens who were aboard a quarantined cruise ship in Yokohama departed Japan on Monday, as Australia and the Philippines also announced plans to evacuate its citizens from the vessel.

The US evacuees left on two charter flights that departed at 7.05 am local time Monday (22:05 GMT Sunday) from Tokyo's Haneda Airport, the US embassy in Japan said in a statement. EFE-EPA
